Rescue Work

In addition to the day-to-day rescue work involving stray, abandoned, lost or injured animals, the Humane Society has been involved in more unusual situations that have arisen from time to time.

Natural Disasters

Following Hurricane Luis which devastated Antigua in 1995, and subsequent smaller hurricanes over the years, the Humane Society has been instrumental in rounding up lost pets and offering them temporary shelter until their owners could be found.

Working with HAMA Productions, the Humane Society produced Disaster Preparedness information for animal owners, both pets and livestock. This information is available in print and also on videos that were narrated by former cricketer Sir Vivian Richards. The Disaster Preparedness videos were funded by WSPA and have been distributed to Disaster Services Offices and Television Stations throughout the Caribbean.

In 1997, the Soufriere Hills volcano on the neighbouring island of Montserrat erupted causing mass evacuations. Countless residents were forced to leave behind their pets and livestock, resulting in many animal deaths and starvation.

Left behind in the volcanic ash that devastated Plymouth.

The Humane Society alerted WSPA to the situation, and they responded immediately by sending their Director for the Caribbean and Latin America, Gerardo Huertas, to investigate. Over the next several months, the Humane Society helped WSPA coordinate the rescue effort, including hands-on participation in Montserrat, resulting in the safe removal of hundreds of pets that were ultimately shipped to the United States for rehoming.

Enroute to a new life.
